GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Manages the day-to day operation of a team, including the scheduling of routine functions and scheduled maintenance, coordinating with a clinical engineer for team project implementation, and assessing the quality and quantity of work. Performs leadership functions on a team, including mentoring of team members and dissemination of pertinent information to the team. Participates in the hiring process of department members. Coordinates and cooperates with other leadership members on the completion of performance evaluations. Uses data indicators to schedule workload and analyze trends. Cooperates with other team leaders to improve department operations. Performs all technical functions of a BMET, but at a much higher level.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Note: The terms medical equipment and medical device may be either or all of electronic, mechanical and computer-based technologies for use in clinical or research applications.

•  Coordinates the day-to day operation of a team, including the scheduling of routine work, prioritization of work assignment, implementation of projects, and assessment of quality and quantity work.

•  Performs leadership functions on a team, including corrective action of team members, completion of performance evaluations with leadership member(s), participation in the hiring process, and mentoring of team members.

•  Acts as a liaison between the team and the leadership team. Disseminates pertinent information to the team on a regular basis.

•  Uses data indicators to schedule workload, scheduled maintenance, improve operations, and identify system problems/trends.

•  Works in close cooperation with other team leaders to manage the department workload and improve department operations.

•  Conducts complete performance assurance and electrical safety testing. Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance on medical devices as required. In cooperation with a clinical engineer develops and revises testing protocols.

•  Responds to medical equipment problems in clinical or research areas; evaluates, troubleshoots and corrects problems up to and including those requiring novel solutions and expert diagnostic skills, involving unfamiliar equipment, and having the highest level of acuity and complexity. Works with manufacturer to correct high level problems (e.g. design, ergonomic) and makes recommendations for improvement. Determines the need to remove and/or replace malfunctioning medical devices from service and implements accordingly.

•  Is the first line of resource for technician team members and helps to think through complex problems in an innovative manner. Performs repairs and calibrations with the highest degree of complexity or requiring expert diagnostic and repair skills.

•  Identifies and refers complex problems to a clinical engineer and develops and implements a long-term solution in cooperation with the clinical engineer.

•  Participates in and may coordinate installations and updates of medical devices when required, including those requiring software revision. Provides technical feedback for device evaluations.

•  Makes periodic rounds of assigned clinical areas to assess operation of medical devices. Notes trends and develops and implements solutions to address recurring problems. Assists other team members in doing the same.

•  Performs technical teaching on the use and operation of medical devices which includes: Instructing clinical, research, and technical staff and other support personnel on the operation, safe use, care and handling, and user maintenance procedures for medical devices. Instructing department and other equipment technical staff on testing, calibration, preventive maintenance, trouble-shooting and repair of medical equipment and basic design and theory of the same. May serve as a technical resource to the department.

•  Using a computer database, sets example in documentation of work performed in terms of quality, thoroughness, accuracy, and timeliness. Documents and m aintains accurate and current inventory records of all replacement and repair parts.

•  Attends and satisfactorily completes advanced training courses on operating, testing, maintaining, and repairing medical devices. Disseminates this newly acquired knowledge to team members, department, and clinical users as appropriate. Consistently leverages this knowledge to improve our procedures and systems for managing and maintaining medical equipment.

•  Using data indicators, intuition, and/or other resources, identifies system, safety and quality problems, suggests and implements solutions, and leads change in department and on teams.

•  Under supervision of an engineer or department leadership, conducts investigations of clinical incidents involving medical equipment.

•  Serves on departmental and hospital committees.

•  Performs on-call function (scheduled rotation) providing in-house repairs and assistance as needed.

•  Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•  Minimum of AS in Biomedical Equipment Technology or equivalent level of education or experience.

•  Minimum of five years experience in Biomedical Equipment Technology.

•  Must have a high level of competence in repair of mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic, and/or computer medical technology to sufficiently diagnose and repair devices and systems.

•  Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and analytical skills through such activities as project and committee work. Strong aptitude for managing people.

•  Biomedical Engineering Technician certification (CBET) desired.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

•  Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills to provide effective leadership for scheduling and technical operations coordination.

•  Demonstrates a strong ability to perform advanced testing and troubleshooting of medical devices involving specialized test equipment and software diagnostic tools.

•  Possesses a high level of understanding of electrical and mechanical biomedical safety principles.

•  Demonstrates a high degree of self-motivation and performs in a highly independent manner with minimal supervision.

•  Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively, and ability to occasionally maneuver and lift heavy equipment.

•  Ability to endure long periods of walking and standing.

•  Strong ability to learn advanced equipment maintenance, operating procedures, and repair procedures from training materials and courses.

•  Skill at performing and providing leadership during routine, emergency, or other stressful situations.

•  Ability to use computer-based tools at a high level, e.g., novel query of a database.

•  Skill at teaching other technical and clinical personnel.

•  Strong general knowledge of human physiology and biomedical instrumentation principles.

•  Skill at management of technical projects.

•  Must be able to promote a customer-oriented philosophy among all staff within the team and department.

•  Demonstrates strong analytical and organizational abilities in order to make effective decisions in an expedient manner while maintaining high quality standards.

•  Uses expertise and judgment in determining appropriate placement and defining appropriate scheduling based upon observation of technician's abilities.

•  Ability to often act as a liaison between BMETS and management in relaying and collecting information.

•  Must be able to appropriately prioritize resources based upon needs and established protocols.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May work in clinical or repair facility with exposure to biological contamination, e.g., blood, and hazardous electrical or mechanical energy, e.g., high voltage. Periodic lifting of heavy objects, typically not exceeding 75 pounds/person.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises the activities of a technical team, which include BMETs, Senior BMETs, and Master BMETs.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

•  Maintains accurate and current records of equipment activities and inventory and replacement parts.

•  May manage portions of operational and/or capital budget with authority for approving overtime and expenditures up to $1,000 within approved budget but without other approval.
